Staffordshire PM Conference

The PMA understands the training needs in general practice and the wider health & social care settings and has now supported the development of NHS staff for over a decade.

We have successfully engaged thousands of your colleagues to refresh and to bridge gaps in their skills and knowledge through the creation and delivery of a comprehensive selection of workshops.

The PMA now has over 120 workshops – but what makes us unique is that our programmes are never a ‘one model fits all’. PMAs workshops can be adapted to meet any specific locality requirements – so please get in touch if you have a specific training need or requirement that is not listed as we would be happy to create something bespoke for you. Equally we are experienced in creating wide-ranging learning programmes.

The web workshops provide practice staff with access to virtual training, which can be delivered in a convenient time window to meet your specific needs. These workshops can also be delivered face to face, if required.

If you want more information on the PMA web workshops or are interested in PMA developing a bespoke programme, please get in touch.

Inclusive and Accessible

PMA is committed to inclusiveness and accessibility. The learner and practice staff-centred sessions will seek to embrace the principle of inclusive learning. These sessions will be delivered in cohorts. Whether face-to-face or virtual, we will engender a learning environment where we all agree to the principles of:

  • Togetherness – and as this is an opt-in opportunity to be included in the programme, we’ll agree on openness and the need and desire to change.
  • Equality, where we are all equal – we can’t change the past but we can change the future.
  • Participation and engagement – where all voices will be heard.
  • Respect and acceptance.
  • Acceptance and agreement of the rules of the room and the rules of engagement.
  • Embracing individual differences.
  • Embracing the Principle of Change.

Building confidence and affirming their identity as valued team members will support their learning and their engagement with the changes needed.

Cost Effective Prescribing

Prescribing is the most common intervention involving patients in the NHS and as such is the second highest area of spending in the NHS, after staffing. Statistics from NHS Digital show that in 2016 there were 1,104.1 million items dispensed, an increase of 1.9% or 20.5 million additional items compared with 2015. This was at a cost to the NHS of £9,204.9 million. With increasing numbers of prescriptions, it is imperative that prescribing is cost effective to provide the best value for money for NHS resources whilst also meeting the clinical needs of the patient.

Introduction to Medicines Management

Receptionists are often the first point of contact in general practice for patients when it comes to ordering their repeat medications or when they have a prescription related query. Often receptionists and administrative staff play a hidden but crucial role in the highly complex process of repeat prescribing. But, the collaboration between clinical and administrative staff is equally crucial to maintaining the quality and safety of prescribing.

Information Governance

With the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), that came into force in May 2018, more attention is focused on ensuring healthcare staff use and share information in a legal and secure way. You will need to understand what is considered personal data and the responsibility the use and sharing of it brings. Learning how good, safe management of information can assist in the provision of good quality care and be a cornerstone of good governance, it will help in understanding the need to incorporate data protection into day to day practice and planning.

Work related stress accounts for 37% of work related ill health and 45% of days lost, in 2015/16. The occupations and industries reporting the highest rates of work related stress remain consistently in the health and public sectors (HSE 2017).

Property Management

We are facing multiple challenges and there is an apparent disconnect between managing your healthcare practice and delivering contracted medical services.  Whilst the ownership of the practice can be separate from the service provision, it is usually the doctors who own and provide medical services. This workshop covers various property issues which have a direct impact on the practice.
