The PMA Awards 2026 will recognise and celebrate excellence in management across all areas of the healthcare sector.

There are 11 categories.
Each has a list of evaluation criteria.

Across all categories the winners are able to demonstrate a dynamic input to practice, PCN or other healthcare environments which are both measurable and of value to the practice, the PCN and the patients.

The judges look for excellence in terms of input and the quality of outcomes. The winner and highly recommended recipients are individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to their role.

Professional Development in
the Non-Clinical Workforce 2026

This award seeks to recognise a Practice/Practice Partners who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of their non-clinical management team and their staff over the last 12 months.

  • a commitment to professional development of the management team and non-clinical workforce
  • delivery of service improvement and the impact of these services on their patients, practice or the local area
  • creative skill mixing, workforce development maximising the potential of practice staff, cross pollination and the introduction of new and evolving roles.
  • outstanding leadership and innovation, resulting in improved practice performance
  • resilience and wellbeing for their non clinical teams – examples of exemplary systems and processes
  • sustained investment in any area of practice management over the last year.

Practice Business Manager of the Year 2026

This award seeks to recognise a Practice Business Manager who has made an outstanding contribution to their practice’s performance over the last 12 months.

  • delivery of exceptional patient-focused services and the benefit of these services on their patients, practice or the local area
  • outstanding leadership and innovation, resulting in improved practice performance, staff development, delivery of services etc.
  • evidence and examples of excelling over and above contractual requirements during the pandemic
  • development of working relationships with primary, secondary, social care and the voluntary sector
  • lead roles in primary care programmes in conjunction with NHSE, CCG, LMC, GP Federation or other primary care organisations resulting in the development of their practice/PCN and/or other organisations
  • sustained improvements in any area of business delivery over the last year.

Practice Manager of the Year 2026

This award seeks to recognise a Practice Manager who has made an outstanding contribution to their practice’s performance over the last 12 months.

  • delivery of patient-focused services and the impact of these services on their patients, practice or the local area
  • creative skill mixing, workforce development maximising the potential of practice staff, cross pollination and the introduction of new and evolving roles.
  • outstanding leadership and innovation, resulting in improved practice performance
  • resilience and wellbeing – examples of exemplary systems and processes
  • sustained improvements in any area of practice management over the last year.

PCN Manager of the Year 2026

This award seeks to recognise a PCN Manager who has made an outstanding contribution to their PCN’s performance over the last 12 months.

  • development of new relationships with other partners across primary, secondary, social care and the voluntary sector
  • innovative workforce development and the use of ARRs
  • advances in population health management using data to direct patient care and deliver services
  • engagement with local populations to address whole population needs particularly in relation to vulnerable, isolated and/or lonely patients
  • significant expansion of their use of digital platforms and other innovation to improve patient access during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • improvement in service delivery across the PCN, improving and making services less hard-to-reach for patients who find it harder to access them
  • becoming true partners in patient’s care and the impact on population health.

Practice Finance Manager of the Year 2026

This award seeks to recognise a Practice Finance Manager who has made an outstanding contribution to their practice’s financial and commmercial performance over the last 12 months.

  • delivery of financial management enabling outstanding practice performance
  • creative skill mixing, workforce development maximising the potential of practice staff, cross pollination and the introduction of new and evolving roles.
  • outstanding leadership and innovation, resulting in improved practice performance

Administration/Reception Manager of the Year 2026

This award seeks to recognise an Admin/Reception Manager who has made an outstanding contribution to their surgery’s performance over the last 12 months.

  • outstanding leadership and positive influence on patient outcomes, safety, and satisfaction including improving access for patients.
  • workforce development maximising the potential of reception staff to address the needs of patients and to assist freeing GPs’ time

Receptionist Team of the Year 2026

This award seeks to recognise a Receptionist Team who has made an outstanding contribution to their surgery’s performance over the last 12 months.

Outstanding contribution to General Practice 2026

This award seeks to recognise a person who has made an outstanding contribution to General Practice over the last 12 months.

  • achievement above and beyond expectations of their role resulting in significant patient benefit in the practice and wider community.
  • proactivity in sharing best practice so patients and communities further afield/nationwide can also benefit.

Lifetime Achievement Award 2026

This Award seeks to recognise outstanding and sustained contributions to the Health and Care sector over a career in Practice and or Business Management.

Nominations are invited – from all managers and other general practice staff – as ‘peer to peer’ recognition of the contributions made by the individual nominated.

  • Recognition for their work and commitment in General Practice.
  • Outstanding and sustained contributions to the Health and Care sector over a career in Practice and or Business Management.
  • Significant impact in, for example, their CCG, LMC, Training Hub or ICS and in supporting other practices and health care organisations.
  • Recognition for their commitment in developing professionalism across the Health and Care sector.

Sustainability in General Practice 2026

The Sustainability in General Practice award acknowledges and celebrates the crucial role of healthcare practices in promoting sustainability.

This category recognises the general practice or PCN that demonstrate a commitment to environmental responsibility and community engagement. By prioritising sustainable practices, these healthcare providers contribute to a greener and more resilient healthcare system.

This award encourages and highlights initiatives that integrate eco-friendly measures into the day-to-day general practice, fostering a positive impact on both the local community and the broader environment.

  • Environmental Impact: Evaluate the practice or PCN’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint through energy conservation, waste reduction, and the implementation of sustainable technologies.
  • Community Engagement: Assess the practice’s initiatives to involve and educate the community in sustainable healthcare practices, promoting awareness and fostering a sense of environmental responsibility.
  • Resource Efficiency: Examine the practice’s efficient management of resources, including medical supplies, waste reduction measures, and the adoption of circular economy principles.
  • Staff Training and Well-being: Recognise practices that invest in staff training on sustainable practices and well-being, creating a positive workplace culture that aligns with environmental consciousness.
  • Innovation and Adaptability: Acknowledge practices that showcase innovation in sustainable healthcare solutions, adopting cutting-edge technologies and demonstrating adaptability in evolving towards more sustainable practices.

Innovation in General Practice Award 2026

The Innovation in General Practice award recognises outstanding initiatives that have significantly enhanced the delivery of healthcare services in general practice settings.

This category celebrates innovative approaches that have improved patient care, streamlined processes, and demonstrated a commitment to advancing the field of general practice.

  • Impact on Patient Care: Judges will evaluate how the innovation has positively impacted patient outcomes and experiences. Consideration will be given to improvements in health outcomes, patient satisfaction, and overall quality of care.
  • Efficiency and Effectiveness: The efficiency and effectiveness of the innovation in improving general practice operations will be assessed. Judges will look at how the initiative has optimised workflows, reduced administrative burden, and enhanced overall practice efficiency.
  • Adaptability and Sustainability: The adaptability and sustainability of the innovation will be considered. Judges will assess whether the initiative can be easily integrated into various general practice settings and sustained over the long term.
  • Technological Integration: Evaluation of how well the innovation leverages technology to enhance general practice services. This criterion will assess the integration of cutting-edge technologies, electronic health records, or other digital solutions to improve overall practice functionality.
  • Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement: The extent to which the innovation encourages collaboration among healthcare professionals, engages patients, and involves other relevant stakeholders will be assessed. Judges will consider the initiative’s ability to foster a collaborative and patient-centered approach in general practice.
