Anatomy and Physiology

  • Understanding the anatomy of veins and arteries used for phlebotomy
  • Common blood disorders and their relevance to phlebotomy
Infection Control and ANTT

  • Principles of infection control and aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT)
  • Hand washing in a phlebotomy setting and overview of pathogens +PPE
  • Safe handling and disposal of sharps and biohazardous materials
Phlebotomy Techniques and Vacutainer System

  • Overview of different phlebotomy techniques
  • Demonstration of venipuncture using the vacutainer system
  • Explanation of different types of blood collection tubes and their proper usage
Patient Communication

  • Effective communication skills with patients
  • Explaining procedures and gaining consent
  • Handling anxious or difficult patients
Emergency Procedures

  • Recognising and managing complications (e.g., fainting, hematomas, allergic reactions)
  • Protocols for emergency situations
Practical Training and Assessment

  • 10 x supervised venipunctures in the student’s work environment to secure sign-off for safe independent practice
