Mental Health Upskilling: Dementia –Session Two

This session focuses on the critical importance of person-centred care and effective communication strategies in dementia settings. This workshop will explore the principles of person-centred approaches that prioritise the unique needs and preferences of individuals living with dementia.

Delegates will learn about validated communication frameworks and their application in clinical practice, emphasising culturally competent communication tailored to the diverse UK population.

Additionally, the session will address common behavioural challenges in dementia care, equipping participants with evidence-based strategies to manage these behaviours effectively. Through interactive activities, participants will practice and reinforce their communication skills in a supportive environment.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this session, delegates will be able to:

  • Define Person-Centred Care: Explain the principles of person-centred care in dementia settings and its significance for improving patient outcomes.
  • Identify Relevant Standards: Recognise the professional standards and guidelines that govern person-centred care, including those set by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and the NHS.
  • Apply Effective Communication Strategies: Utilise validated communication frameworks, such as the SPIKES protocol, in clinical practice to enhance interactions with patients and families.
  • Understand Behavioural Challenges: Identify common behavioural challenges associated with dementia and understand their underlying causes.
  • Implement Evidence-Based Practices: Apply evidence-based strategies for managing challenging behaviours in dementia care, informed by UK research and guidelines.
  • Engage in Role-Playing Activities: Demonstrate improved communication skills and techniques through role-playing exercises, reflecting on real-life scenarios and their application in practice.
