This full-day workshop on Advanced Clinical Skills in Wound Care is designed to equip healthcare professionals, including nurses, clinical staff, and advanced practitioners, with the skills to recognise, manage, and refer complex wounds such as leg ulcers, surgical wounds, diabetic ulcers, and pressure areas. It provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of wound care, including referral pathways, and ensures accurate documentation in clinical practice.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this session, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the anatomy and physiology of skin and tissue and its relevance to wound healing.
  • Differentiate between infected and colonised wounds and apply appropriate treatment strategies.
  • Assess, treat, and refer patients with leg ulcers based on clinical guidelines.
  • Apply advanced management techniques for diabetic ulcers and vascular wounds.
  • Recognise and manage common complications in surgical wounds.
  • Prevent and manage pressure ulcers effectively.

Recognising and Treating Infected vs. Colonised Wounds

  • Identifying signs of wound infection versus colonisation.
  • Exploring treatment strategies, debridement, antimicrobials, and antibiotics.
  • Activities: Case study analysis, wound assessment demonstrations, and group discussions.
Managing and Referring Leg Ulcers

  • Differentiating between venous, arterial, and mixed etiology ulcers.
  • Compression therapy and referral pathways for non-healing ulcers.
  • Activities: Practical sessions on leg ulcer assessment, ABPI measurement, and role-playing for referrals.
Surgical Wound Management

  • Principles of caring for surgical wounds and identifying complications.
  • Post-operative care, dressing selection, and management strategies.
  • Activities: Hands-on sessions and scenario-based discussions on surgical wound management.

Advanced Management of Diabetic Ulcers and Vascular Wounds

  • Pathophysiology and risk factors for diabetic ulcers and vascular wounds.
  • Referral to diabetic foot clinics and vascular specialists.

Pressure Area Care and Prevention

  • Identifying causes and risk factors for pressure ulcers and implementing prevention strategies.

Assessment, Documentation, and Use of Technology in Wound Care
