Mental Health Upskilling: Dementia – Session One

This workshop aims to provide Nursing, Midwifery and AHP workforce with a comprehensive understanding of dementia, focusing on the importance of early identification and effective risk reduction strategies. Participants will explore the various types of dementia, the clinical relevance of adhering to national and local dementia guidelines, and the role of healthcare professionals in identifying risk factors.

This session will combine theoretical knowledge with practical insights, encouraging participants to apply what they learn in their clinical practice to enhance patient care and outcomes for individuals living with dementia.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this session, delegates will be able to:

  • Define Dementia: Describe the different types of dementia and their key characteristics, emphasising the impact on individuals and families.
  • Recognise the Importance of Early Identification: Understand the significance of early diagnosis in dementia care and identify the tools and methods used for assessment.
  • Identify Risk Factors: Recognise common risk factors associated with dementia and discuss strategies for risk reduction and prevention.
  • Apply National and Local Guidelines: Demonstrate knowledge of the relevant national (e.g., NICE) and local dementia guidelines, understanding their implications for clinical practice.
  • Integrate Evidence-Based Practices: Identify ways to incorporate evidence-based practices related to dementia awareness and risk reduction into everyday clinical care.
  • Collaborate Effectively: Discuss the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in dementia care and how to work effectively with other healthcare professionals to support individuals with dementia and their families.
